It was only 19 years since the Navy got its first Aircraft carrier, when the Japanese showed the true power of this form of warfare on December 7, 1941. At that time the Navy had 7 large and 1 small aircraft carriers, 5 patrol wings and 2 Marine aircraft wings, 5,900 pilots and 21,678 enlisted men; 5,233 aircraft of all types including trainers, and a few advanced air bases. But they were spread out over the world. It became very clear to win any war you had to first achieve superiority in the air. Our Naval Pilots of WWII did just that.
