This is a museum quality reproduction of an extremely rare WWII hat badge. In WWII the bulk of initial training of pilots was done by civilian contractors. Avenger Field near Sweetwater TX was unique in that it was the training school for the WASPs. Avenger Field was operated by Aviation Enterprise Ltd. The owner was R E McKaugham, as President, Henry E. Kriegel and L D McKaugham as a limited partner. The school was opened on April 4, 1943. Avenger Field was spread over 1901 acres and had four hangars, eleven barracks and seventeen other buildings. The airfield consisted of three auxiliary fields. The trainers were civilian pilots as was common in that era they wore Army uniforms. From old photo’s you can see the trainers in leather jackets and wearing a hat with a distinctive Eagle on the front. This is the reproduction of that eagle in die struck brass with a gold plate. The badge is 2 ¼ inches tall.
