It was a tradition after WWI for veterans to wear a lapel button to signify their wartime service. These lapel pins and buttons are extremely hard to find. This is a museum reproduction of the SPA 3 lapel button in sterling silver.
It is the same design of a very rare French Pilot badge wing that pre-dates WWI in sterling silver. BL3 was formed in early 1912 at Pau, France. In October 1915 they became N3 with the introduction of Neiports to the Squadron. The stork was designed by Major Felix Brocard the commander of Combat Group 12, this squardron was part of that group. In April 1917 the offical name changed to SPA 3. Also in July 1917 Capitaine Georges Guynemer became the commander of the squadron. He was a lendary hero with 53 confirmed kills, but unconfirmed put it closer to 100, and this stork design was named after him. It is called the Guynemer Stork to this day. Guynemer failed to return from a combat mission on 11 September 1917. French school children of the time were taught that Guynemer had flown so high he couldn't come back down again. He is also known for the following quote "Until one has given all, one has given nothing."
Many different insignia variations were made of he stork during the war. A picture of the badge can be found on page 322 of French Military Aeronautical Branch Badges up to 1918 By Philippe Bartlett.
